Early years and childhood
Henrik Björn Lundqvist was born on March 2, 1982 in Åre, Sweden. Together with his twin brother Joel Lundqvist, he grew up in a sports-interested family in the scenic Jämtland. Henrik and Joel started playing ice hockey at an early age and were inspired by their father's passion for the sport. The family eventually moved to Båstad on the Swedish west coast, where the brothers had better opportunities to develop their talents in the sport.
Henrik started his ice hockey career in Järpens IF, a small club near Åre, before moving to Rögle BK's youth team in Ängelholm. There, he developed his skills as a goalkeeper and quickly became known for his focus and work ethic. Despite his young age, Henrik showed early on the mental strength that would define his career and he developed into one of the most promising goalkeeper talents in Sweden.
Career start in Frölunda HC
Henrik and Joel Lundqvist both went on to Frölunda HC's junior team, where they continued to develop and made their first impressions on the professional hockey scene. Henrik made his debut in Frölunda HC's first team in Elitserien (now SHL) during the 2000–2001 season and quickly established himself as one of Sweden's foremost young goalkeepers.
With Frölunda, Henrik became a key player and led the team to two Swedish championship golds, in the seasons 2002–2003 and 2004–2005. During these years, he also set several records in the Elitserien, such as the lowest save percentage (1.05) and the most clean sheets in a season, cementing his reputation as one of Europe's best goalkeepers. In the 2004–2005 season, he was also named the league's most valuable player and became the first goalie in the history of the Elitserien to win the Golden Puck, the award for Sweden's best ice hockey player.
NHL career with the New York Rangers
Henrik Lundqvist's star status in Sweden led to him being drafted by the New York Rangers as the 205th overall player in the 2000 NHL Draft. Despite the low draft ranking, Henrik quickly showed that he was ready to take the step to the world's best hockey league. During the 2004–2005 NHL lockout, he chose to stay in Sweden and play another season with Frölunda, but in the fall of 2005 he finally made his long-awaited debut for the New York Rangers.
Henrik's first season in the NHL was a sensation. He established himself as the first goaltender and became the first rookie goaltender to win 30 games in his debut season with the Rangers. He was also a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy, which is given to the league's best rookie and his performances earned him the nickname "King Henrik".
Over the next few years, Henrik Lundqvist became one of the most prominent goaltenders in the NHL and a leading player for the New York Rangers. He won the 2012 Vezina Trophy, an award given to the league's best goaltender, after dominating the season and helping the Rangers reach the Presidents' Trophy as the league's best team during the regular season.
Henrik became known for his incredible ability to react, his unique ability to "read" the game and his calm and focused attitude in stressful situations. He was a given leader for the Rangers for over a decade and led the team to several successful seasons in both the regular season and the playoffs. The highlight came in 2014 when he took the New York Rangers to the Stanley Cup Final, where they lost to the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
International Career and Success with Tre Kronor
Henrik Lundqvist has also had a distinguished international career with the Swedish national team, Tre Kronor. He made his debut in the national team as a 19-year-old and became an important cog for Sweden during several major tournaments. The highlight came in 2006 when he, together with some of Sweden's top hockey players such as Peter Forsberg and Mats Sundin, led Tre Kronor to a historic Olympic gold in Turin. This made Sweden the first country to win both Olympic gold and World Championship gold in the same year.
Henrik has also won World Cup gold with Sweden in 2017, where he joined the team during the playoffs and played a crucial role in the final against Canada, where he saved two penalties in the penalty shootout. His international merits also include two silver medals from the 2003 and 2004 World Championships, as well as several top finishes in international tournaments.
Personality and influence outside of ice hockey
Henrik Lundqvist is known not only for his performances on the ice, but also for his style and personality off the rink. He has a strong sense of fashion and style and has been the face of several major brands, such as Head & Shoulders, Bauer and Tag Heuer. He has become a symbol of the modern, successful sports star with one foot in both the sports and fashion worlds.
Henrik is also involved in charity. Together with his wife Therese Andersson, whom he met already during his time in Frölunda, he started the Henrik Lundqvist Foundation in 2014. The foundation works to support children and young people through education and healthcare, both in Sweden and internationally. The foundation has donated millions of dollars to various charitable causes and organizes annual events to raise money.
Later years and retirement
Henrik Lundqvist played 15 seasons with the New York Rangers and became one of the greatest legends in the club's history. He holds several records for the Rangers, including the most wins, the most games played as a goalie, and the most shutouts. However, in the summer of 2020, the Rangers ended their partnership with Henrik as part of the team's rebuilding phase, which led to him signing a one-year contract with the Washington Capitals.
Unfortunately, there was never a debut for the Capitals as Henrik announced in December 2020 that he suffered from heart problems and needed to undergo heart surgery. His planned comeback in the NHL was canceled and in August 2021, he officially announced that he was ending his professional ice hockey career.
On ice hockey and future perspectives
After his retirement, Henrik Lundqvist has continued to be involved in the world of ice hockey as an expert commentator for NHL broadcasts on American television. He has also had a recurring role as an expert in Swedish sports programs. His deep knowledge of the sport and his analytical ability have made him a popular voice in hockey media.
Henrik remains heavily committed to his foundation and continues to participate in charity events and projects to give back to the community. He now lives in New York with his wife Therese and their two daughters, Charlise and Juli.
His success on the ice, combined with his humble personality and commitment outside of the sport, has made Henrik Lundqvist one of Sweden's most beloved sports personalities. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest ice hockey goalies of all time and a role model both on and off the ice.
